How to use this list

Pull two-syllable words for a quick sorting game: write each on a card, say it once, and have students clap the beats before placing it in the “two” pile. Speech-language pathologists can use the same set for production practice, asking the student to hold the first vowel slightly longer than the second. Parents reviewing homework can read the list aloud together and mark stress with a finger tap. Poets scanning for iambic or trochaic feet will find ready pairs that fit a line without extra syllables.

What makes a word 2-syllable

A two-syllable word contains exactly two vowel sounds. The count follows the spoken form in the pronunciation dictionary, not the number of vowel letters on the page. Silent letters and digraphs do not add extra beats.

Words people commonly miscount

Tricky cases appear when spelling and sound diverge. “Fire” is often written as one syllable yet carries two vowel nuclei in careful speech (/ˈfaɪ.ər/). “Orange” looks like it might hold three vowel letters but is pronounced with two (/ˈɔr.ɪndʒ/). “Poem” is frequently miscounted as one; the dictionary form is /ˈpoʊ.əm/. “Real” can be reduced in rapid speech, yet the citation form keeps two syllables (/ˈriː.əl/). These mismatches are the reason the list is generated from recorded pronunciations rather than orthography alone.
